Being honored as a top 30 pub and bar rater by Google, I feel a profound responsibility to spread the love. Here are some of my favorites.
Old Wine District… Vienna
Great area, middle of nowhere north of Vienna… great place to stagger, plenty of places to urinate.. This is Vienna’s old wine area. A fascinating walk through winding roads through wine storages and wineries, you’ll think you’re in Hobitton. A short distance from Stadtwanderweg 5, it’s largely ignored by tourists and a must see.
Lochness.. Bratislava
Flanagans… Vienna
The headliner, Flanagans is my favorite European bar. The staff are Irish, the owner is Irish and the clientele are mainly local non-Austrian Europeans that live in Vienna. It’s a rather large place and it fills up fast, especially on football match days. VERY reasonable especially for Vienna.
Pub in Prague 6, North of the city
Not exactly a shit-faced place, this is a unique pub in Prague 6, north of the city. Its claim to fame is that you have to walk there. It’s in the middle of a state walking trail. (See map below)
It’s a trail I’ve walked many times, and in perfect Prague fashion, it’s hard to find. If you ask the locals where it is, they’ll grunt and tell you to fuck off. (Compared to Czech’s, terrorists are friendly) That said, I LOVE this park, the hike, and this pub.
The Little Duke, Alicante
The little Duke is in Alicante, Spain. It’s in a nice location near the beach and caters to a tourist (No shit, right?) crowd, but they’re relatively friendly English and Scottish alcoholics. Fun place.
Titi Gourmet… Alicante
This is not a particularly great place in Alicante, but you can tell your friends you went to a Titti gourmet.
Red Sky… Bangkok
Red Sky Bar, Bangkok. Like all rooftops in Bangkok, prepare to spend money. Drinks under $20 are rare, but the experience is exhilarating. Bangkok’s rooftops are WAY the fuck up, VERY classy and a great place for a date. If you take a classy Thai woman, you’re on third base before the elevator stops. I love Red Sky. (This image is not the bar, it’s a floor below. The following is Red Sky.)
Becketts… Budapest
Sorry to say, this is an internet photo of Becketts, in Budapest. I couldn’t find a photo that I took. That said, I’ve been here at least a dozen times. A favorite with travelers, expats and people working in the film business, Becketts is a local landmark. Great pub food, a nice ground and a great location.
Sheridan’s… Curitiba, Brazil
Another internet photo, I’ve been to Sheridan’s in Curitiba Brazil a dozen times. I absolutely LOVE this place. You can get a great 16oz steak for $14 US . Microbrewery beer is about $3 US. The really cool thing about Sheridans though is the live music. Sheridan’s bands are not just good, they’re a whale of a good time. Brazilians are, by their nature, fun loving people. Quick to smile and exceedingly friendly, it’s hard not to have a great time here.
Hennessy’s… Merida Mexico
Hennessys is a top 5 pub worldwide. It combines a great restauranteur, Sean Hennessy, top pub food and truly great guests. Mr Hennessy was a local legend for paying his staff right through the Covid crisis, has a heart of gold. I can’t say enough about this pub. It’s everything an Irish pub is supposed to be. I practically lived here the six months I stayed in Merida, Mexico.
The Chevy, Danang, Vietnam
Great place to drink and people watch. With the average beer at $2, you can spend a lot of time here.
